A Week

On Friday the 18th, I had a gig with a bassist, Yutaka Kaidou, at "Violon"in Asagaya.
This time, we played mainly improvised music. It was relaxing and enjoyable.
It was so quiet in Violon that I could feel the breathing of everyone in the audience, so I had been nervous while I was playing before, but now the silence felt comfortable.

On Sunday the 20th, I had a concert as a member of "Saraband" at "Kouen-doori Classics "in Shibuya.
I had time before the sound check, so I went to the Shoutou Museum, where there was " Korea and Japan Metal Art "exhibition. I found the work of Korean artist, JOEN Yong-il, interesting.
I enjoyed playing in the concert in the evening. "Saraband " had never played there before. It sounded different from before, and felt fresh. It was easy for me to play, because I could see the other members of the band from the grand piano. There was another unit, a duo called "Ingenue",which is Yuikio Nishihara, the bassist from "Saraband ", and Yoshimi Aoki.
It was an excellent combination. Yoshimi's voice was soft and clear, and sounded comfortable. There was 2 babies in the audience. They were listening to her and swaying, but they sometimes fell off their seats.

On Tuesday the 22th, Rehearsal of "Conneticut Urban Syndicate".
The leader had asked me to take 6 new songs down in musical notation, and had sent me the Mini Disk with the new songs on. I wrote all of them in 2 hours at a studio and 1 hour and a half in "Dotour". I managed to do it in time !

On Wednesday the 23th, I had a recording with Yoshihiro Goseki , a sax player. It was just recording our playing on our Dats and MDs for ourselves in a studio, but it worked better than we expected. We recorded some very good music. Even so the "Bosendolfer " sounds marvellous !!

I finished reading a mystery book, "Don't ask" by Donald E. Westlake. The story is a comedy where the main character is a thief. I like the kind of light flavour...
Now I've started reading a book, "The Department of Queer Complaints " by Dickson Carr, which I chose from the many books in the paper book which my friend, a writer and bassist, who loves books, gave me.

Rehearsal

Last Wednesday, I had a reheasal with Aoi.
We had chatted together for a long time sitting on the floor of the studio, and then we started playing a song.
I had brought a pan-flute to play a very short phrase "Ra,Ti, Do Ti Ra " which sometimes appears in one of the songs on the CD. I've hardly ever played a pan-flute before. I held it back to front at first, I noticed it was wrong in the middle, and turned it over. "Oh it's strange, because the notes are lined up in the reverse direction from the piano. It's difficult to play. I can only play twe notes, Ra, Ti ..." While I struggled playing it, Aoi was chuckling.
Afterwards we played some music from a book, like Sarabande and Chaconne with voice and piano, and we started talking about Canon. I remembered a " Cuckoo Song"in a round which I learned in our school days.We talked about the lyrics of the song, " It's strange! Why are the cockoos waking us up ?! "
Although the rehearsal went over time and wandered away from the subject, I think I've got a kind of feeling of the flavour of our group.
After the rehearsal, I wrote 2 canons at home. I'm planning to play them at the next rehearsal .
I'm looking forward to trying it.

Mystery & A Book about Stars

I 'm still very much into mystery novels.
Following on from "The Memory of Scarlet", I'm reading "Breakheart Hill "by the same author, Thomas H. Cook. The story evolves very slowly, the same as the ones I read before. It was tiring to read in the beginning, but as I went on reading, I got drawn into it.
He tells the story looking back at the past. The things on the surface are washed away by the passage of time, and the true colors of the people behind the incident and the real causes come into view.

At the same time, I started reading a book about stars which tells you the way to find stars in the sky, Constellations, and has photos of stars.
I went out of my room onto the veranda, and looked up at the sky, I could see a lot of stars.
Then I remembered how when I was a child, after I read about the existence of a star, "Betelgeuse", which has a diameter 1000 times the size of the sun. I was so excited that I couldn't sleep.

I felt the range of my view of time and space expand.

Snow

Oh, is that snow ? When I got off the train, I saw something white floating down from the sky.
That was strange -when I got on earlier, it had only been raining・・・was it really that cold ?
but while I was thinking that, the fleecy lumps of falling snow had coverd the ground with white.
The snow on the ground was soft like a carpet - it made a crisp sound with every step.
I walked back to my house watching it snowing with a feeling of space and freedom.
